Did you know that when you type “my husband” into Google, the top five phrases that auto-complete are ALL negative? In fact, of the top ten phrases that Google auto-completes “my husband” with, only one is positive. The outlier, interestingly enough, is “My husband is my best friend.”
I’m very lucky, because that phrase completely describes me. My husband is my best friend!
Now, I’m not saying our marriage is perfect – in fact, no marriage is perfect. Ben Affleck is right – marriage takes hard work, but the sacrifice is worth it! My husband doesn’t always get the credit he deserves, but today he will! Here are five reasons why my husband is my best friend:
1. My husband is my best friend because we both have similar, quirky personalities!
Chris and I met on Eharmony.com. When he requested communication with me, the first things I noticed about him were his wild hair and his Hawaiian shirt! When my mom saw his photo, she told me that he would be perfect for me – and that he looked like a nut! That’s when I knew I had to get to know this guy better! Sure enough, we clicked on our first date – and the rest is history!
2. My husband is my best friend because he’s introduced me to awesome new things!
Through Chris, I’ve discovered the joys of Penny Arcade, Star Trek, and food trucks! (Strip Search - a reality show about comic strip artists - is the most compelling reality show I’ve ever seen, by the way.) Of course, I don’t share all of his passions. Whenever I watch a football game, I always root for the clock to run out. But for the most part, whenever he wants to check out something new, I find myself enjoying it – sometimes even more than he does!
3. My husband is my best friend because he communicates with me, even (and especially) when he’s upset.
Everyone loses their temper, but when Chris loses his, his deepest desire is to talk out his feelings. Seriously! How many women can say that about their husbands? Chris is definitely the talker in our relationship, and I’m the one that shuts down – but when I do, he gets me to open up. Not a lot of people can get me to lower my guard, but he can.
4. My husband is my best friend because he loves our son deeply.
Every day before he goes to work, he opens the door to Troy’s room, just to look at him. He smiles, says “I’ll see you later today, little guy,” and closes the door again. He does it because his own father used to work late, and would come into his bedroom after he’d gone to bed to say goodnight to him. It’s, well, endearing!
5. My husband is my best friend because he supports me in what I want to do!
When I was laid off from my last teaching job, I was three months pregnant. I got a job working part time as a tutor, and I realized that when the baby came, my strongest desire was to stay at home with him. Chris has been amazingly supportive of my decision – and I deeply appreciate how hard he works and the sacrifices we’ve made as a family to make it possible!
