This week, I’ve been eating whole foods – mostly vegetables and protein, with some fruit mixed in - and my weight has stayed consistent at 217. I’m only one pound away from 50 pounds lost, but I’m not in a rush to get there. It’s taken me a year to lose 49 pounds, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Here’s why: I imagine myself as a little piggy, with two silly piggy brothers. A smooth-talking salesman has sold my brothers straw and sticks to build their homes with, ensuring them that they will be finished within a week. Meanwhile, I am building my house with bricks. Bricks take a lot longer to lay down, but they provide a much sturdier foundation, and although I don’t know what’s coming, I’m sure my home will be able to stand up to any storm.
Sure enough, along comes a mean, ugly wolf, who blows down the houses of my silly brothers. As they take shelter in my home, the wolf follows them, and tries his hardest to blow down my house.
But my house is made with the bricks of whole foods, and bound by the cement of daily activity. It’s not going anywhere.
Going on fad diets can get you thinner faster, but they also make it much harder to maintain your weight loss. I’ve lost and gained back a lot of weight in my life – usually in 30-pound chunks – and it feels terrible. I’m tired of building my house with sticks and watching it fall apart as I get fatter every year.
Today, I can proudly say that I weigh 50 pounds less than I did a year ago, and although I’m not finished, I know that once I reach a healthy weight, the journey will have made me stronger and wiser.
Are you on a weight loss journey too? What methods are you using to get healthy?
