Gazelle Intensity – A Lesson from Dave Ramsey

My weight loss efforts have not been going well lately.  I haven’t been gaining weight, but I haven’t been losing weight either.  I’d like to say that my metabolism is to blame, but truthfully, I’ve been eating more than I ought to be.

I know that if I give my weight loss goal 100% of my effort, I’ll be successful.  Sometimes, in order to get ourselves passionate about our dreams, it’s helpful to think about times when we’ve been successful in the past.

Four years ago, before I began listening to The Dave Ramsey Show, my financial knowledge was nonexistent.  I had just graduated from a teaching credential program, and I had $10,000 in credit card debt, $12,000 in student loan debt, a car with about $7,000 still owed to the bank, and a checking account with a few hundred bucks.

I needed to get out of debt.  So, I became “gazelle intense,” as Dave puts it!  There weren’t a lot of job openings in San Diego, so I moved out to the high desert and got a job fairly quickly.  And because the school district that hired me was in a higher-than-average poverty area, I became eligible for a state scholarship that paid off most of my student loans!  I rented a modest apartment and lived within a fairly tight budget, and had my credit card debt paid off within a year!

Today, all of that debt is completely paid off.  If I could pay off $29,000 on a beginning teacher’s salary, then I can lose 96 pounds!  It will take time, but it’s definitely doable!!

What are some things you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of?

It’s so true! I just found some old pics from my thinner days and it was good motivation to see that I’ve done it before, I can do it again!

Plus, I feel you on the debt thing…my credit card debt will be paid off in November, and then all I’ve got left is student loans! I never thought I wouldn’t have debt, but now I can see the light! I just need to approach weight loss with the same intensity :)
